From Puerto La Cruz

Public transportation

In the Puerto La Cruz Bus Terminal you will be able to take a "Jeep" that will take you - in about 45 minutes - to Los Altos de Sucre.

The Service is available from 05:00 am to 09:00 pm.

The fare is - to this date - BsF. 8.00 (about US$ 2.00) per person. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the fare is BsF. 10.00 (about US$ 2.50)

To return to Puerto La Cruz, go to the passenger terminal at Los Altos de Sucre. The same conditions and fares apply. You may also request the service at any place on the route, using the customary hand signal.

In Puerto La Cruz, look for the Guaraguao traffic circle.

In Guaraguao, take the "Guanta - Cumaná" (Route 9) route. Some 5 km (3 mi) later you will find the Guanta interchange. Again, take the route to Cumaná.

Note: If you haven't done it before, fill up at the PDV-Chorrerón Gas Station.

The road continues towards Cumaná passing the Pertigalete police control point ("Alcabala").

About 4 km (21/2 mi) later you will find - to your right - the exit to Los Altos de Sucre.

Turn right and Drive carefully! The road rises some 650 mts (2,100 ft) in about 8 km (5 mi). The road is narrow with several blind switchback curves. Take your time and enjoy the landscape and the views over the imposing bays of Pertigalete, Conoma, Conomita and Santa Fé in the Mochima National Park. In clear days, you'll be able to see the Island of Margarita and the Peninsula of Araya. Arriving to Los Altos de Sucre, the road descends and levels out begining to show the town's attractions

Other Alternatives

You can request the services of some of our guides. They will pick you up at your hotel in Puerto La Cruz, bring you to Los Altos de Sucre and return you safely home. The Guest Services office at your hotel or your favorite travel agent can make the necessary arrangements.

From Cumaná

Public transportation

There are two alternatives to get to Los Altos de Sucre from the city of Cumaná:

  1. At the city of Cumaná Bus Terminal, take a bus (or "carrito") that takes you to the city of Puerto La Cruz, State of Anzoátegui.

    Once in the Puerto La Cruz Bus terminal take a "Jeep" that will take you - in about 45 minutes - to Los Altos de Sucre.

    The Service is available from 05:00 am to 09:00 pm.

    To return to Cumaná, go to the passenger terminal at Los Altos de Sucre. The same conditions and fares apply. You may also request the service at any place the route, using the customary hand signal.

    Once in Puerto La Cruz, take a bus or "carrito" back to Cumaná

    Note: This Alternative is the safest if you don't have much experience in the use of public transportation in Venezuela.

  2. At the city of Cumaná Bus Terminal, take a bus (or "carrito") that takes you to the town of Santa Fé, State of Sucre.

    Ask the driver or conductor to leave you at the Santa Fé National Guard Post (Guardia Nacional) at Santa Fé. The post is on the highway (Route 9).

    Ask the guards where to take the jeeps that will take you to Los Altos de Sucre, using the scenic Zurita route.

    To return to Cumaná, go to the passenger terminal at Los Altos de Sucre. The same conditions and fares apply. You may also request the service at any place the route, using the customary hand signal.

    Once in Santa Fé, take a bus or "carrito" back to Cumaná.

Private car

Look in Cumaná for the exit to Puerto La Cruz, State of Anzoátegui...

  1. In downtown Cumaná: Look for the El Indio traffic circle and follow the signs that point to Puerto La Cruz.
  2. In the San Luis hotel area: Exit to the main road and turn right (west) to get to Puerto La Cruz.

Drive on along Route 9 for some 44 km (27 mi) until you get to the town of Santa Fé. Along the way you will pass the villages of Plan de La Mesa, Bella Vista, Mochima, Yaguaracual and Nurucual.

  1. The Zurita Route:

    Turn left towards Turimiquire at the intersection just after the Santa Fé National Guard Post (Guardia Nacional).

    Continue for some 6 km (4 mi) and turn right on the road going up to Los Altos de Sucre - some 11 km (7 mi) further down the road.

    Note: Be on the look for the intersection since it tends to "hide" behind the vegetation. It is a paved farm road with some steep inclines, passable to all kinds of vehicles.

  2. The Coastal Road:

    Follow Route 9 towards Puerto La Cruz for some 20 km (121/2 mi) until you reach the Los Altos de Sucre intersection where you will turn left. You will have passed the towns of Santa Cruz, Playa Colorada, Arapito and Arapo.
